Chuckanut Bay Kayak Water Sampling

June 23, 2022 @ 2:30 pm 5:00 pm

Another month, another monitoring event has been scheduled.

Anyone up for some community science by kayak? Join me and the Whatcom Marine Resources on Thursday, June 23rd at 2:30 PM to paddle around North Chuckanut (aka Mud Bay or Chuckamud Bay), aiming to be in our boats by 3. Sampling should take about 1-2 hours. I can train you up on how to collect samples. Must bring your own gear and be ready for cold water immersion- though hopefully you’ll stay dry in your boat!). The distance is pretty minimal, barely crossing under the trestle and sort of doing a circle around the enclosed bay. It’s usually a nice, relaxed paddle with a good purpose. The samples are mainly to look at bacteria with shellfish harvest in mind.

If enough folks are interested and the weather holds, we could do a little longer paddle around Chuckanut Bay outside the trestle after collecting samples if there’s time.

Please reach out to me if you’re interested and I’ll keep you in the loop. We’ll cancel if the wind picks up too much, even though that area is pretty sheltered.

Sami was a wonderful helper last time – I hope you join again!

Cheers,
