Join us for a trip to the Deer Group (south side of Barkley Sound)

Dave and Joy Church, and Dave Peebles & Mary Rausch (plus possible others) are planning a trip or 5 or 6 days to the Deer Group on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and would like more people to join us. The tentative dates are either Aug. 7-11 or Aug. 15-19. Dates are negotiable and flexible, though we all have to work around other commitments.

The advantage of this destination over Kuyuquot Sound or Esperanza Inlet is that the trip up island is much shorter, making it possible to drive and paddle in one day; also, the paddle out to the first camp is only a couple of nautical miles or so. This is mostly protected water, though the open ocean is available. The crossing to the Broken Group is about 5 nm. In our experience, the Deer Group is much less crowded than the Broken Group.

Another attraction is the possibility of seeing humpback whales up close. Ask Ed Alm about this.
