Events & Services

Here’s a list of our featured events and services.

Regular Club Meetings

WAKE meets NSEA (Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association) community room on the third Tuesday of every month (with the exception of June, July, August and December). Meetings start at 7:00 PM and are open to the public. They feature guest speakers, trip presentations and other topics of interest to kayakers. Check the Home page or the Calendar for speakers/topics.

Day Paddles for Members

WAKE members can enjoy a variety of day paddles announced at meetings or on the website. These activities are often posted on the Calendar although last-minute paddles are sometimes announced via email.

Multi-Day Trips

WAKE trip leaders are encouraged to schedule multi-day paddles (for members only) to the San Juan Islands, the Gulf Islands and in British Columbia. We’ve also enjoyed trips to Baja and other destinations far and wide. These activities are typically announced at meetings and posted on the Calendar.

Members Helping Members

Often held at the Community Boat Center, MHM is an unstructured time for members to meet and work on skills, receive coaching from more experienced paddlers or simply enjoy a good paddling session. It’s a great way for a new sea kayaker to learn the basics. These activities are typically posted on the Calendar and may show up in email as a last-minute paddling opportunity.

Pool Sessions

Held during the winter months at Arne Hanna pool, members get together informally to work on rolling, rescues, or wet exits.  Usually scheduled twice a month.  Notification is by google group WakeShortNoticeList. Email Jeremy for more info.

WAKE Kayak Skills Symposium

The Symposium, a June event, is a full day of free, on- and off-water training for WAKE members only. It’s a great opportunity to learn new skills or build on skills you already have. Volunteers and course development occurs in late spring, usually late May or early June. Note the date on the Calendar.

Gear Swap

WAKE holds an Annual Gear Swap, usually in May, with used kayaks and/or canoes as well as lots of kayak clothing and gear. The public is welcome to bring kayaks and other paddling equipment to sell; WAKE charges a 10% (not to exceed $100) commission on all items sold at the Gear Swap. Check the Calendar for more details.

Lummi Campsite Stewardship

WAKE has long been the volunteer steward for the Lummi DNR campground –our little gem on Lummi Island. We service the campsites and cooperate with the Washington Water Trails Association [WWTA] and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Lummi DNR Details

Ski to Sea Race Safety Boats

The Ski to Sea race is held on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. WAKE members volunteer as safety boats to monitor and if necessary, assist race participants during the kayak leg of the relay. Volunteers are solicited closer to race day, usually in early May.

Annual Tri Club Picnic

The September Tri Club Picnic is a joint event with  Hole in the Wall Paddle Club, NSSKA and WAKE. The Tri-Club picnic usually happens in early September at Bowman Bay. so watch for it on the Calendar.
