New Years Day Paddle

January 1, 2021 @ 8:00 am 5:00 pm

Friday is our annual New Year’s Day Paddle.

  • Will you be a group leader? Due to covid, each group will be limited to 5 households (e.g. 5 to 7 people). A group leader AKA Trip Initiator, needs enough experience kayaking and perhaps has led a group before. https://wakekayak.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/wake-trip-leader-rules.pdf  Contact me or more experienced members if you want to discuss it.
  • Location – Although group leaders will establish their plan, departure around 10:00 am or 11:00 am was proposed, from the CBC Community Boating Center in Fairhaven, paddling to Chuckanut Island or Teddy bear Cove.
  • Distance – As described above, it would be around 7 to 9 statute miles.
  • Meeting time, butts in boats, return time shall be pre-established by the group leader.
  • Forms & membership – a new 2021 waiver form is required, see attached , print and sign. We will try to have some at the put-in as well.  2020 and or 2021 Membership is required (any 2020 members automatically have membership through 2021). If your membership expired in 2019, please renew. We will finally be removing any unrenewed members from the email lists next week.
  • Safety –  Per website, paddling CBC to Chuckanut bay would be LEVEL II:  Experience with wet exits, self and assisted rescues and bracing. Potential for enough wind to create waves. Wind waves of 1-2′ might break over bow. Potential for some chop. Current to 1-2 knots. Easy to moderate landings.  Dress for cold water immersion is required. it’s winter, dry suits are strongly advised and likely required for everyone’s safety.  Paddle trip safety for WAKE:  https://wakekayak.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/wake-paddle-trip-safety.pdf
  • Covid-19 – Please follow Covid-19 practices like stay 6 feet apart, limit group size, hand sanitizing, cover your cough, wear masks on shore.  6 feet (1 cow length) means avoid close talking, showing phones, or touching other’s phones, to reduce everyone’s risk. Thank you.
  • Weather – Current weather prediction is for around 40 degrees with wind of perhaps 10 knots and rain. That doesn’t sound promising, but we will find out as the day gets closer. Last year the weather fooled us, it was a gorgeous day despite the ominous prediction for which we canceled. Better than it turning unexpectedly bad during a paddle, though.

Group Leaders, please RSVP to the group. Non-leader attendees, you can RSVP just to me and any Group Leaders once they speak up.

Happy Paddling!
